Throughout human history, people have long worshipped the sun, the moon and the stars. In addition to relying on them to identify time and direction, ancient people believed in the mysterious force of these celestial bodies. Hanging high in the sky, these heavenly bodies oversaw the secular world and dictated all propitious and ominous moments therein. They were also considered to have intimate associations with the fates of all human beings. In this section, astral deities related to Jiao rituals are displayed. Due to the belief that Lord Nandou and Beidou look into life and death issues respectively, they are constantly found at Daoist shrines and temples. Moreover, with heaven-mankind interconnections, the Daoist pantheon of Zhongtian Beidou deities has become a commonly used image for auspicious blessings.
Though interconnected, humans and heaven sit far apart from each other. To bridge the gap, Daoist masters serve as intermediaries, conveying earthly prayers to the distant heaven through various communication methods, such as meditation, prayers, and petitions with the help of deities overseeing vice and virtues, heavenly masters, and other divinities. The Cloud Path of Fairly Cranes Submitting the Petition on display depicts grand Daoist masters submitting petitions through meditation. Observed from the earth, the heavenly palace clearly unfolds before the eyes amidst the clouds.
