People once believed that the Earth was flat and that the sun and stars revolved around it; in the past, being born was synonymous with sin and was seen as the root of suffering.

Religious faith has long provided spiritual solace to people with its emotive power; while science continuously challenges and brings progress to human life.

Today, we face the task of “how to sustain the Earth.” The fusion of faith and science allows us to break through traditional boundaries. With the interweaving of sensibility and rationality, we open our minds to find solutions.

In the 18th dialogue of this year, the Museum of World Religions transcends religious boundaries and invites representatives from various religions and scientists to engage in a dialogue between spirituality and science. Through the dialogues and the intertwining of the soul and action, we explore whether there is a solution to ecological sustainability. What more concrete actions can we take for the Earth and for ourselves?

Today, the Earth faces unprecedented crises like global warming, greenhouse effect, water pollution, soil contamination, and an excess of difficult-to-manage waste—including nuclear waste that remains hazardous for millennia. The significant loss of rainforest area is driving many species towards extinction. The various conflicts and disharmony among people have led to highly destructive wars. The resulting bombs and weapons have harmed both the human body and mind, as well as the Earth’s environmental ecology. A single missile falling into the sea can kill millions of marine creatures.

Experts from various fields unanimously agree that the way humans have treated the Earth is not friendly to most forms of life—including humans themselves. Considering that humans cannot exist outside of Earth, we will share the bitter fruits of ecological disaster with all living things.

So, can we start to change now? Can we have a healthy, natural, pollution-free, and harmonious living environment? If we want to change, where do we begin?

Master Hsin Tao has proposed the concept of “Spiritual Ecology.” He appeals, “In the face of the ecological crisis, the most important cure is the spiritual awakening of humanity because the root of the crisis lies in the greed, hatred, and ignorance of human hearts.” The Master further elaborates, “The entire ecology is a community of life; spirituality is ecology, and ecology is spirituality. The root of all things is spirituality. We are partners on the platform of spirituality and interdependent and coexisting with each other. Therefore, for all things, we must irrigate with the great love of spirituality, also the great love of truth.”

We sincerely hope for a better future and can make changes now; every little bit of each day, every thought and intention, learning to connect with spirituality and to connect with ecology, making every moment an opportunity for awakening, and gathering the power of right mindfulness and practice for every sentient being.
