In Japan, almost every mountain has a deity revered by the local people, collectively known as “Sanno”. This pair of artifacts represents the Sanno of Mount Hiei in Japan; the deity on the left is the Daigyouji-no-kami, associated with major events and ceremonies, to the right is Yamasueno-oonushinokami.
