Along with Vishnu, the preserver, and Shiva, the destroyer, Brahma, the creator god of the universe, is regarded as one of the three deities. There are four faces on Brahma, each of which faces one of the four cardinal directions. He has the Vedas, a lotus flower, prayer beads, and a bowl for alms in each of his four hands. Only three faces of Brahma are shown in this sculpture due to its relief form, each holding a bowl for alms and prayer beads. The smaller figures to the sides represent Brahma's devotees.
