This painting is attributed to the French painter Philippe de Champaigne. The theme of the "Good Shepherd" who carries the sheep on his shoulders is emblematic of "Jesus Christ" in the Christian religion; Jesus once compared himself to the Good Shepherd who takes care of his people and may even sacrifice his own life. The Parable of the Lost Sheep is one of the parables of Jesus as described in Luke 15.
